In an age of digital convenience, many iPhone users across Europe and the UK are asking:" Can I add my driver’s license to Apple Wallet?"
While this feature is already live in parts of the U.S., things look a little different here in Europe — for now. But the landscape is changing. In this article, we'll walk you through where things stand in Ireland, the UK, and the EU, plus how to use the feature in the United States if you're eligible.
Can You Add a Driver’s License to Apple Wallet in Ireland or Europe?
Not yet — but it's in progress.
As of mid-2025, Apple Wallet does not support adding driver’s licenses or national ID cards in Ireland, the UK, or most European countries. The technology is already deployed in the U.S., but Apple needs to partner with local governments to make it available elsewhere.
We know there's growing interest in this feature across Europe, and several initiatives are underway.
What's Happening in the EU?
The European Union is developing the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI) — a system that will allow citizens to securely store and use official documents like:
- eIDs
- Driver’s licenses
- Health records
- University degrees
This initiative is separate from Apple Wallet and expected to roll out between late 2025 and 2026. However, it moves the digital identity conversation forward and may open the door for future Apple integrations.
What About the UK and Ireland?
- UK: The government is building a Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework, but Apple Wallet support is not yet on the roadmap.
- Ireland: Authorities are exploring digital ID options, but no public roadmap currently includes Apple Wallet.
We'll keep Loop Mobile customers updated when these features go live in the region.
Why Isn't It Available Yet?
Digital IDs in Apple Wallet require:
- Direct government approval
- Integration with national databases
- Strict data security and privacy compliance
That means Apple must negotiate separately with each country — a process that takes time.
What You Can Use Apple Wallet for in Europe
Even if you can't store your ID, Apple Wallet remains incredibly useful in Ireland and Europe:
- Apple Pay (supported by all Loop Mobile iPhones)
- Transit and rail tickets
- Flight boarding passes
- Loyalty and event cards
- Hotel key cards
Using a Digital Driver’s License in the U.S.
If you have a U.S.-issued license, you can add it to Apple Wallet in supported states.
